How is the TOK essay marked?

An IB examiner reads the whole essay and gives one global mark out of 10, matched to five bands: Excellent (9-10), Good (7-8), Satisfactory (5-6), Basic (3-4) and Rudimentary (1-2). There are no separate criterion marks, and an essay that does not answer a prescribed title scores 0. The grader predicts that mark and explains, paragraph by paragraph, what is holding your essay in its band.

Does it work for the May 2027 prescribed titles?

Yes. Enter the prescribed title you are answering along with your essay, and the grader checks whether the essay answers that title as it is worded - the most common reason good writing lands in a low band. Our May 2027 titles guide explains what each of the six titles asks.

How long should a TOK essay be?

The IB limit is 1,600 words, and examiners stop reading at 1,600. The grader accepts essays from 800 words and warns you above the IB's 1,600-word limit, so you can check an early draft as well as a finished one.

What stops a TOK essay reaching the top band?

Usually one of three things: surveying perspectives instead of building one argument, naming areas of knowledge without using them, and generic examples ("science shows...") instead of specific, named cases. How do tokens work?

Each submission uses 1 token. Your first 2 tokens are free on signup and work on any grader (TOK, EE or IA). Top up any time from the Tokens page, where larger packs have a lower per-token price.

Can I get a refund if something goes wrong?

If grading fails, your token is not consumed. You only pay for successful analysis.

How accurate is the grading?

The TOK grader uses a custom-trained model with TOK-specific feature extraction, not a generic ChatGPT prompt, and scores your essay against the current IB TOK assessment criteria. In our testing it tracks examiner judgement more closely than an off-the-shelf LLM. Treat the predicted grade out of 10 as a well-calibrated estimate to guide your redrafting, not an official IB mark. What feedback will I receive?

Overall grade prediction on the 0-10 IB scale, 6 TOK dimension scores, paragraph-by-paragraph analysis with strengths and areas for improvement, and prioritised actionable recommendations.

Can I view my past submissions?

Yes. All your previous submissions and their feedback are saved to your account and accessible any time from your submission history.

What happens if the grader is offline?

If the grader is offline, the submission fails and your token is refunded automatically - the status badge shows when it's back.

What formats can I upload?

Paste your essay text (800 words or more) straight into the form. The grader warns you above the IB's 1,600-word limit.

How long does grading take?
