Frequently asked questions

What does the EPQ review cover?

Your whole Extended Project: the production log, the dissertation or artefact report, and the presentation evidence (slides, script, the supervisor's record of the questions). Each of your exam board's assessment objectives gets a band with the passages it rests on, the moderator checks that apply to your submission, and an indicative total on the board's scale.

Which exam boards and project types are supported?

AQA (7993, out of 50), Pearson Edexcel (ZPJ30, out of 54, on the unit grid for your route), OCR (H857, out of 60) and WJEC/Eduqas (out of 100), for the dissertation, investigation, artefact and performance routes. Pick your board first - the grids and the scales differ.

Can I submit before everything is finished?

Yes. Upload the parts you have. A missing production log caps the planning and reflection objectives, and the review says so instead of failing. Without the product the review is partial: the objectives your log and presentation evidence can show are marked and totalled, but there is no grade letter or boundary ladder until the product is in. A log-only upload gives you a draft check of your process evidence before you write the product.

My production log is handwritten or scanned - does that work?

Yes. A scanned or photographed PDF is accepted and transcribed page by page during the review. Files can be up to 40 MB and 200 pages, so a bound log with photographs is fine.

Is this an official mark?

No. It is an indicative mark to help you redraft before you hand in. Your centre marks the project and the board moderates it; this review tells you what a moderator would look for at the next band and could not find in what you submitted.

How accurate is it?

The grid, the band descriptors and the boards' published moderator findings are applied directly, and the total is calibrated on real board marks. On 41 Pearson Edexcel projects with board-moderated marks, held out from that calibration, the indicative total lands within ±4.2 marks of 54 on average (92% mean accuracy), and every objective is within one band of the board's. AQA, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas are reviewed by the same judge on their own grids; their moderated marks are not yet published to measure against.

Is using an AI review allowed by my exam board?

JCQ rules let you use AI tools as long as the work is your own and the use is acknowledged. The review gives general feedback and never writes any part of your project for you. Record that you used it in your production log: the candidate declaration on every board's record form covers the sources and help you drew on.

Is my project used to train your models?

No. Submissions are never used for training. They are processed to produce your review and stored only against your own account so you can revisit them.

How long does a review take and what does it cost?

Three to six minutes, longer for a scanned log. One grading token per review, the same token that grades an Extended Essay or an Internal Assessment, with two free at sign-up.
