Work out your IB Diploma score out of 45: six subject grades plus the TOK/EE bonus matrix, every failing condition checked, and your UCAS Tariff points. Free, no account needed.

Enter six subject grades (1-7, at Higher or Standard Level) plus TOK and Extended Essay letters, and the calculator returns your total out of 45, every failing condition checked against the IB's award rules, and the UCAS Tariff conversion.

The TOK/EE bonus-points matrix

The two core grades are read together, not added. An E in either component is a failing condition - the diploma is not awarded regardless of subject points.

IB to UCAS Tariff conversion

UCAS assigns Tariff points per component. HL and SL grades 1-2 carry no Tariff points; TOK and the EE earn points even at grade E, because the Tariff and the IB's award rules are separate systems.

How each grade is built

Subject grades (1-7): final exams + your Internal Assessment

Every subject grade already contains coursework: the Internal Assessment your teacher marks (and the IB moderates) typically carries 20-30% of the final grade depending on subject and level, and considerably more in arts subjects. Your IAs are the part of each grade you can bank before exam season starts.

TOK (A-E): essay two-thirds + exhibition one-third

Since first assessment 2022 the TOK grade combines two components: the 1,600-word essay, externally marked out of 10 and worth two-thirds, and the exhibition, marked out of 10 by your teacher, moderated by the IB, and worth one-third. (The old presentation is gone - the exhibition replaced it.) The weighted total converts to your A-E letter using boundaries the IB sets each session, which is why this page does not hard-code a marks-to-letter converter.

Extended Essay (A-E): one 4,000-word research essay

The EE is marked against five assessment criteria and converted to a letter grade from A to E using session boundaries. Together with TOK it produces the bonus points in the matrix above - and an E in it caps the whole diploma.

Frequently asked questions

How are IB Diploma points calculated?

Your IB Diploma total is your six subject grades (each 1-7, so a maximum of 42 points) plus up to 3 bonus points from the TOK/EE matrix, giving a maximum of 45. CAS is pass/fail and adds no points, but must be completed for the diploma to be awarded.

How many points are TOK and the Extended Essay worth?

Together TOK and the EE are worth up to 3 bonus points, decided by combining the two letter grades in the IB's matrix. Two As, or an A with a B, earn 3 points. An A with a C or D, or a B with a B or C, earn 2. A B with a D, or two Cs, earn 1. A C with a D, or two Ds, earn 0. An E in either component means the diploma is not awarded at all.

How many points do I get for a C in the EE and a B in TOK?

A grade C in the Extended Essay combined with a grade B in TOK earns 2 bonus points. The matrix is symmetric, so a B in the EE with a C in TOK also earns 2.

What is the maximum IB score?

45 points: a grade 7 in all six subjects (42 points) plus the full 3 bonus points, which requires at least an A and a B across TOK and the Extended Essay.

How many UCAS points is my IB score worth?

UCAS Tariff points are assigned per component, not per IB total. Each HL grade earns from 56 points (grade 7) down to 12 (grade 3), each SL grade from 28 down to 6, and TOK and the EE each earn from 12 (A) down to 4 (E). For example, three HL 6s, one SL 6, two SL 5s, TOK B and EE C total 218 UCAS points.

How is the TOK grade calculated?

Your TOK grade combines two components: the externally marked 1,600-word essay, worth two-thirds, and the teacher-marked, IB-moderated exhibition, worth one-third. Both are marked out of 10, and the weighted total converts to a letter grade from A to E using boundaries the IB sets for each examination session. The old TOK presentation was retired in 2022 - the exhibition replaced it.

Do my Internal Assessments count toward my IB points?

Yes - not as a separate line, but inside every subject grade. The Internal Assessment typically carries 20-30% of a subject's final grade depending on subject and level (considerably more in arts subjects), so a stronger IA directly lifts the grade that feeds your total out of 45.

When do IB predicted grades come out?

Schools set their own timetable, but most issue final predicted grades in September or October of the application year so they can go into the UCAS reference ahead of the mid-October Oxbridge deadline and the January main deadline. Ask your IB coordinator for your school's date.
